Not a Fan: Becoming a Completely Committed Follower of Jesus

Are you a fan or a follower? The dictionary defines a fan as "an enthusiastic admirer". Fans wan to be close enough to Jesus to get all the benefits, but not so close that it requires sacrifice. The Not a Fan book by Kyle Idleman challenges you to consider what it means to call yourself a Christian. With a direct frankness that you're not likely to hear in Sunday school class, Kyle invites you to take an honest look at your relationship with Jesus. His call to follow may seem radical to us, but Jesus desires it for every believer.

I just have a couple of more pages to read from this book, and what Kyle Idleman has to say has definitely grabbed my attention! It has changed the way I look at my relationship with Jesus. My prayer is that God will completely transform my heart to be a completely commited follower of Jesus Christ! Thank you, City On a Hill, for this great book! (Posted on 7/7/2016)

This book will change the character of your relationship with ChristReview by Jessie
This book was given to me by a woman who does Bible study with me and the other women who live at a mission. She had told us about it before giving us a copy. It seemed she was completing the small group study with it and could not stop raving about the difference it was making in how she saw her relationship with Jesus. I had actually noticed for a while that she was becoming more and more energetic about our Bible study and she kept wanting to do more and more for everyone. She had begun praying for any problem facing one of us, and she loved so much more deeply!

Well, she brought us each a book about 3 weeks before we started the study and by the time we started I had read the book and began to see my own relationship with Christ changing. I had known God, the Son, and the Holy Spirit since I was two, as I learned to read by reading the Bible. But, it had not kept me from messing up my life. I married the wrong man, who beat me and our children, and marrying a Christian man turned out so badly for me, started down a road of immorality. I felt like I was being "Me" for the first time.

Well, to make a long story short, after 30-something years, God brought me back into a closer relationship with him. Jesus showed me how he had stood beside me during my first marriage, carrying me through. I thought my relationship had gotten on track after that. But then, I got "Not A Fan."

As I read about Jesus actually asking for more from those who wanted to be his followers, I realized that I had read all those words before, but it was as if I had scales on my eyes, and fog in my brain. The more I read, the more I understood that Jesus wasn't calling us to acknowledge him throughout the New Testament, but to actually follow him closely, to study him, emulate him, and get to KNOW him like one gets to know a lover. I have stopped calling him my Lord and Savior, although he is both. But, now, I call him Master. I am his slave.

Everything I do these days, I run it through my "slave/Master analyzer" which I have developed in my mind to decide if I am actually being a slave of Christ or a slave of me. It has taken me to a whole new level in my relationship with Christ. Before, I would say that relationship was based mainly on how others would judge it. Now, I care about no one's opinion, except my Master's. And, I love him so much more deeply. The other girls that I live with are reporting the same changes.

Thank you, Kyle, for writing "Not A Fan." I just ordered Gods at War, too, and can't wait to read it! "Not A Fan" has taken my life into a complete renovation, so I figure I might as well buy more tools! :0) (Posted on 7/21/2013)
Life changingReview by notafankim
I attended the original sermon series "Not A Fan." Up until that time I really was of fan of our Lord although I did not know it. Baptized as a baby and became a fan. Attended mass 6 days a week, memorized it in Latin along with the Rosary each weekday before parochial school started, knew all of the church rules, and attended Holy days of "Obligation" for mass, automatically responded in the mass and in appropriate church manners. I knew a religion.
So sad to say after all of that I did not know what the bible said. Fell away as a young adult. I had no relationship with the Lord. So sad.
A series of events led me back to God and to Southeast Christian Church. God never waste a hurt and was I ever hurting. I was broken.
The Not A Fan sermon and book came at just the right time. Amazing how that happens. I was so blind and ignorant about God's love for me, His forgiveness. WOW. It was amazing. All of that time spent in church as a child but had never really heard that. I had heard what a horrible sinner I was and if I kept the religious rules I might squeak into heaven.
Before Not A Fan I just knew that I did not need to be baptized again, thought that base was covered. Baptism happened when I was a baby, parents chose it for me. Since then I'd been a pretty good person, had a good heart, going to heaven. I was going to heaven through my own works, knowing the church rules. No real relationship with the Lord though.
During my journey through Not A Fan I finally lost the chip on my shoulder which I had been carrying around, defending my religion. I was so moved by the Lord working in my life that I could hardly wait for the freedom, the forgiveness, the new life that I was to experience with the honest to goodness voluntarily, of my own adult choosing, choice to be baptized. God was asking me to be a follower of His, for me to ask each day "How can I serve you today Lord? And "help me to die to myself" when myself keeps getting in the way.
God wanted a relationship with ME!
I was baptized and Kyle performed the baptism. Kyle has the Lord's hand upon him as you discover in the pages of this book. Kyle makes it real for real people. He makes it very clear of the choice that we are called to make.
I keep the "Not A Fan" books in my supply. I take them wherever I go to distribute and have given away dozens of copies to family, friends and strangers.
I would never have expected that my life would be where it is today. I now look for every opportunity to preach of our Lord's love for us wherever I am. Ideally through actions, words if necessary. I am finding that most people are starving for it, starving for truth that can only be found in God's word, in God's love. The joy I now have in my heart comes bursting out. Not A Fan's message ignited some smoldering embers in my heart. Now my heart is on fire for the Lord. And Yes, some people think that I am a freak. It is OK.
Now whenever there is a personal storm in my life I run to the Lord FIRST. The situation may not turn out the way I understand at the time but I have faith now and have come to know that it is God's way and His is the best way.

I am Not A Fan and would never want to be anything else!!!!

My thanks to Kyle for writing this book and for following where the Lord is leading him. (Posted on 12/10/2012)
Being a Christian doesn't stop at salvation . . . Review by Maggiemae
I accepted Christ at the age of 13 -- 50 years ago. Until I read Not A Fan I had no idea what being a follower really meant.

In the Baptist church I heard that we should "die unto self" daily. No one ever explained what that meant. I determined (wrongly) on my own that it was; not cursing, not gossipping, not drinking/smoking, and a whole list of tangible "things" I should deny myself. The Holy Spirit lovingly revealed to me through Kyle's words that a follower GIVES all things that stand between them and serving God to Him.

I prayed the prayer of yielding everything, even to and including my life, to God. He has given me such peace. The fear of what is to come I have had for years has gone. God is in total control.

Thank you, Kyle, for allowing God to speak through you. My life has been changed for it.

Eye-openingReview by JoeInKy
I purchased this book on May 24th, 2011. By May 26th, I had read it cover to cover. I am not what you would call an avid reader. In fact, I do not enjoy reading, period. After hearing about this book and viewing the website, I decided it sounded interesting and I was still investigating my beliefs so, why not give it a chance. This book changed my life. Everything I've learned growing up about Christianity and what it means to be a Christian didn't even cut it close to the standards this book reinforces referring to Jesus' teachings on how we should conduct ourselves as "completely committed followers". After finishing this book, I made the decision to come forward at the end of service May 29th and spoke with a decision guide who assisted me in my commitment. On June 12th, I was baptized.

We all will fall and, continue to fall. This book will give you additional resources, guidance, and inspiration to be firm in your commitment and understand exactly what you're committing to if you haven't yet made that step.

I encourage anyone from any background to give this book a chance....you won't regret it. (Posted on 6/13/2011)
Couldn't put it down ... read it straight through, then prayed for help in being more than a fan ... a followerReview by Ned Barnett
This is a remarkable book - I bought it at my church's bookstore on Saturday after the service - it was on the "new book" shelf and it called to me, a call I've learned to heed. Picked it up this morning (Sunday) and read it straight through, cover to cover, then ended by praying for help in becoming not just a fan, but a true follower of Jesus - the kind of follower Christ challenged us to become (as spelled out in Kyle's book).

The book is divided into three sections - the first, and most compelling, in 7 chapters Kyle makes the case for being a follower - showing in His own words that Christ didn't want fans. I thought Kyle did an excellent job of opening my eyes to a clearer understanding of many of Christ's most memorable (and hardest to 'get') statements, such as "let the dead bury the dead" and other commands to drop everything and follow him (or, basically, to get out of the way).

Then, in four chapters, Kyle issues an "informed consent" invitation to truly follow Christ (by spelling out what that means). Finally, in three hard-hitting chapters, he dissects a series of comments Christ made to people who approached him, wanting to follow him, but "not just yet" or "not completely" - and this clarifies much of what had always left me puzzled about His answers to the rich young ruler, and to others who said to Christ's offer, "Follow me," a resounding "ya-but" answer.

All that was missing (and this surprised me) was a closing chapter which pulled it all together. Not that Kyle's concepts are hard to follow - they are challengingly, painfully easy to follow (following Kyle is easy - but as he makes it clear, following Christ is anything but easy - you have to be ready to pay any price, and many do who truly follow him). Those last three chapters were down-right frightening.

I mean, what if Christ calls me to a foreign ministry - me without a passport or plane fare? What if Christ calls me to confront my co-workers in a way I've never felt comfortable even comtemplating? What if Christ wants me to challenge my own family to put aside their disbelief and follow Him? The answer is simple (and almost impossibly difficult) - to embrace Christ as a follower, instead of as a fan, I have to be ready for any of these challenges (all of which I selected here to illustrate this point because they frighten me to my core).

If you think you are a follower of Christ's, this book may well open your mind to the realization that you're just a fan ... and if you are a fan, this will help you see why that's really (I mean REALLY) not enough. Having been baptized last October, I thought I was sure-enough a follower of Jesus, one granted grace by faith and therefore "saved." However, at the end of this book, I prayed for God's help and the Holy Spirit's guidance to become a true follower - to overcome my very real fears and embrace Christ's challenge, "Follow me."

This is also a very human book, with humor and pathos and real, believable stories about people I could all-too-easily identify with. It is neither frothing at the mouth with fire and brimstone nor so caught up in "entertaining' that the message is lost or diluted.

I recommend this book every bit as highly as I recommend my own Pastor, Jud Wilhite's, remarkable collection of books which helped open my eyes to faith. If you've read this far, buy this book and read it right away!
